Weather conditions at sea Wednesday September 4
This Wednesday morning, Tom Dolan on Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan continued to push 50 miles from the finish in Royan. He managed to distance his rival Alexis Thomas on Wings of Ocean by almost 8 miles. We can highlight the great performance of Gaston Morvan on Région Bretagne-CMB Performance who managed to climb to second position despite a failure of his automatic piloting. The fleet was very spread out with a gap of more than 100 miles between the leader and the last competitor Anthony Quentin on JPS Controle.
On Wednesday morning, the north-northwest wind is blowing between 8 and 13 knots for most of the fleet and allows for close-hauled sailing at good speed towards the Charente coast. The sea is gradually calming down with a northwest swell between 1.3 m and 1.8 m. At midday on Wednesday, the first sailors are approaching the Charente coast and see the northwest wind ease a little. They are expected early in the afternoon in Royan with a nice arrival under spinnaker in 7 to 10 knots of northwest wind. The rest of the group on the nearby Atlantic will continue to make progress at 7-8 knots of speed under a slightly irregular northwest wind with wind speeds oscillating between 8 and 15 knots depending on their position on the water. A large part of the sailors will cross the finish line between the end of the afternoon and the evening in these conditions of medium northwest wind. The last skippers are expected in Royan in the middle of the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
