Quiroga Leads At Bishop Rock

Published on 08/09/2021

Finally the mist has been lifting from the Scilly Isles as if on cue for the racers on Stage 3 of La Solitaire du Figaro. Pierre Quiroga(Skipper Macif 2019) leads the fleet through, passing Bishop Rock making over nine knots. He is being pursued by Alexis Loison (Région Normandie) and Corentin Horeau (Mutuelle Bleu pour l’Institute Curie). Quiroga leads by nine minutes ahead of Loison and 12 minutes on Horeau.

The tide turned here at 1400hrs (French time) and although there is an order in place there have been three major shakeups and re-starts since the 34 boat fleet left Fécamp on Sunday. From Bishop Rock there is still 105 miles to sail to the finish line off Roscoff on the Bay of Morlaix. It is a notoriously difficult place to finish into in light winds on a changing tide. “I will now try to protect my place and go into defense mode. There is routing with a wind transition to look for.” Pierre Quiroga explained quickly to the VHF.
