Laperche in control, Roberts 8th

Seven minutes separated the top six skippers and four minutes the top three at the Rochebonne turning mark at the end of last night’s 95 miles express downwind, the opening phase of Stage 2, a 490 nautical miles race from Lorient to Fécamp.

And just as he did on Stage 1 at Rochebonne, when the all-too-familiar light was also the first mark of the course, so once again it was Tom Laperche, the young CMB Bretagne Performance sailor leading the charge. Laperche rounded at 0057hrs local time, early this morning with Fabien Delahaye (Groupe Gilbert) two minutes behind in second and Eric Péron (French Touch) one minute after Delahaye. General Classification leader Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) was five minutes after Laperche.

This morning as the fleet head North West, bypassing Lorient in the 15-18kts of North Easterly, Laperche is one mile ahead making 13kts on the fast reach.

We have a sustained wind, waves over the deck, good speeds, but it is wet! I am well equipped for it but I am still wet. I have a helmet with a visor that protects me well, but my boots are full of water water! We went down to Rochebonne under spinnaker. Then the wind rose. We go back under a gennaker, the boat is going quite quickly between 18 and 14 knots. It’s slowly easing off, ” confirmed Eric Peron, hanging in with the lead group on his French Touch.

Laperche reported not long before dawn,“Apart from a little pilot stall which caused me to lose a bit of distance, it goes quite well under a gennaker. It’s heeling a lot on starboard tack, and it’s going pretty fast. The boat whistles a little. The wind should ease and lift during the day. But we are a little ahead of the routings, “ confides Tom Laperche.
Alan Roberts (Seacat Services) is eighth at a little over three miles behind Tom Laperche.
