“What a leg! A great one, just like we were looking forward to. It all came down to when I grabbed the lead on Monday night. After that, I made gains now and then, watching what was happening behind me. I had a scary moment, when I saw the others change course. But it worked out with the timing just right. I found some good speeds and enjoyed it. When you are away from the others, it’s hard to know how far ahead you are in terms of your lead. I’m not taking anything for granted. There are more legs to come. I’m not feeling tired yet, but it will hit me soon. It was a long leg, so I tried to pace myself – when to attack and when to rest a bit. Usually the exclusion zones annoy me, but this time, it was all part of the game.”

“It’s nice to be here in the brilliant sunshine in Lorient! We had a lot of sunshine, but it was really cold at night. It was tough, but nice to be able to sail quickly. I have known since the start of the season that I can be fast upwind. Now that has been confirmed. If it was an exam at school, I’d say I didn’t do too badly. There are a lot of things you have to get right. I’m a long way behind Xavier, but I got a great second place. We had plenty of opportunities to rest and get some sleep. But close to the finish, you are always scared of hitting a boat or a buoy, so you don’t sleep on the final night. It wasn’t that tiring, even if physically testing as heeled over at 45 degrees all the time. We didn’t have many manoeuvres or tactical plays. I didn’t find the force to keep up with SNEF during the night. He just shot away. There were a couple of tacks I could have done, but I didn’t feel up to it. A few little technical mistakes meant he made his getaway from me. Anything is possible in the next three legs. The Solitaire is a race where you learn each time, so experience counts. Downwind it was in choppy cross seas and upwind, it wasn’t pleasant heeled over in wet conditions. I kept at it, believing I could catch him and get a good lead over those behind. I come from the Olympic circuit, and this was a real offshore leg, so this result was pleasing.”

“Tenth is a good result. The group of boats behind me split in two and I didn’t know which to cover. One group got past, but apart from that, it was good. I had fairly good boat speed upwind and I chose the right tacks and stuck to the plan and it worked well. It was cool to be alongside Gildas Mahé as we train together. A pity I didn’t catch him, but I’ll get him next time. For me, it was important not to knock myself out on the first leg as that would mean spending your time trying to catch up. Time-wise, I am in touch with everyone, apart from Xavier. Mentally I was good and never cracked even after the bad start. I was pleased with the speed. It was good fun in the waves and gusts of thirty knots and some extreme broaches. There was a full moon, so that was good fun. I had the mast nearly in the water twice. It was not the hardest leg we’ve done. Upwind it was OK. We just had to trim the sails now and again and try to decide where to go.”

“It was really hard - we had a massive upwind leg in 25-30 knots coming back from La Coruna - that was a bit tough. My speed going upwind is not great, so I lost a bit of time and position. I had a rough start, but then did a good job going downwind to La Coruna and gained a lot, but unfortunately I lost it again in the upwind coming to the finish. The experience is phenomenal - it’s pretty cool to know that in every single boat around you is an incredible sailor that pushes so hard. You don’t find that everywhere - I found it in the Olympic classes, where you know how much work ethic the other sailors have, and it’s the same here. Some of them have done this race 15 times - it’s incredible. I feel good - I think I was able to manage myself pretty well, getting sleep and recovery out there, so I don’t feel horrible, but the upwind was hard on the body. I’m absolutely looking forward to the next leg - it will be completely different to this one, with way more strategy because it’s inshore and coastal. It will be pretty challenging, especially managing the rocks and tidal gates. The guys at the top I’m sure will be pushing just as hard. Every year you hear stories of how close they get to the next rock or headland - it will be really cool to see.”
